A Tale of Two Hats

The lovely Liz of a belle, a bean, and a chicago dog recently posted about her daughters and their friendly sibling competition.  When I read the post, I thought, "hmmm, that doesn't really happen in our house."

I think I jinxed myself, because suddenly, Abbey and Dylan are the cutest little poster children for sibling rivalry.

Too young to compete over grades or athletic prowess, their rivalry focuses on the "I Want THAT!" game.

The rules of the game are simple.

The first player chooses something to play with.  The aforementioned something can be a toy, a kitchen utensil, or a fuzzy cheerio found under the couch.

The second player sees the item in question and absolutely, positively can't live without it.

Sometimes there is an immediate confrontation and tug of war.  Other times, the game is more covert, with the second player waiting until the first loosens their grip on the object or sets it down for even an instant, at which point, said object is fair game.

Before playing outside one afternoon, Abbey expressed her deep desire for Dylan's new hat.  Listeing intently, she seemed to understand when I explained that Dylan needed the hat to protect his little head from the sun.  Little did I know she was plotting a bait and switch right under my nose.

The rivalry has begun.
"look, I brought out this hat instead!"
all part of her plot to secure his hat
I call this move "the distraction" - note the cute smile and shiny shoes
the coveted hat
the coveted hat 1.1 second later
he does not appreciate the need for sun protection
and she swoops in for the grab, her winter hat left in the dust

I sort of want her shoes.

And honestly, there are a lot of awesome things about having a sibling but the stuff stealing? Is maddening. Unless you're taking something of theirs that is good.

LIttle kids totally are smart enough to plot and execute the bait and switch.

Awesome that you documented it with your camera. :)

Ah, yes, we are very familiar with this game as well! This morning the fight was over who got to sit in Daddy's chair at breakfast. It was only an issue because Baby R climbed up there instead of waiting for me to put her in her high chair. Mommy's mistake...

Hahaha!!! You have just described my house at all times. Are you sure we don't live in the same one? I am wondering if it is the same older girl/younger brother dynamic going on.

My 2 year old's screams? I have never heard anything so dramatic.

Does he fight back yet?  Dylan's 17 months, and yes, the yelling is so dramatic.  He PUSHED her the other day, though, and I didn't know whether to scold him or high five him (just kidding, kind of).

I'm glad to know I don't have the only older sister/younger brother frenemies around :)

Oh, the chairs at the table!  We have those arguments as well.  It's so funny the things they find to compete about.

    So, so true!

The good thing about not having a fancy camera is that it's small enough to take everywhere, so I am able to inappropriately capture moments like this before putting on my referee hat.  And when I finally get that iPhone, there will be no stopping me.

Of course, they will probably be in college by the time that happens, and I doubt I'll want to capture their dorm-room escapades.

Things are grabbed in my house one million seven hundred and eighteen times each day.  I swear.

And the shoes? Target.  A little foot binding, and they'll fit in no time :)

Hee hee.  I only have one child so I don't know of this rivalry you speak of...but it makes awesome blog fodder.
