Planning for Halloween

Five o'clock is a crazy time of day at our house.

Dylan's nap creeps late into the afternoon, leaving us with a small window of time between nap and dinner time.  Most days, that sliver of time is too small to wander over to the park, but it's too large to just read a book and play for a few minutes.

So after Dylan snuggles himself awake, taking a few moments to climb into my lap after I retrieve him from his crib, we often find ourselves outside.

Sidewalk chalk, bike rides, bubbles occupy our time until about five o'clock, when we have to go inside to clean up and begin dinner.

Before that, though, I have to wrangle Abbey and Dylan inside, like a shepherd with wayward sheep as Abbey rides up the driveway "one more time" or Dylan takes out the chalk that I just placed back on the shelf.

Usually there's a breakdown on our way inside.  Screaming.  Refusing to walk through the door.  Tears.

Usually, it's not me.  Usually.

Tension fills the kitchen.  I gently wipe tears and find cool water bottles and try remember to breathe and not let my own annoyance poison the air.

I may try to faciliate a truce with a cheese snack, cheddar for Dylan, mozzarella for Abbey.

Surprisingly, these times often bring forth some of our silliest moments.

"Get it? Got it? Good!" I exclaimed one evening as Abbey pulled her favorite Tinkerbell cup from the refrigerator.

Hilarity ensued; it was obviously the funniest thing I have ever said in my life.

"Say it again!" she managed to gasp out, between giggles.

"Get it?  Got it?  Good!"

"Again!"

Repeat the exchange at least ten times, both of us saying it, Dylan laughing, possibly because he thinks we're crazy.

Any tension in the room dissipated, I pull out pasta and parmesean, pots and pans in comfortable silence.

"Mommy?"

"That's what YOU should be for Halloween!"

"What honey?" I ask absently, my mind on what vegetables I can sneak into their meal.

"Get it, got it, good!"

What?

"How would I be get it, got it, good?" I ask, confused.

"You know...get a shirt with the words.  Then ride a pink scooter and wear a helmet."

Like I said, it's a crazy time of day at our house.

Feel free to thank me for the excellent costume advice.  I'll pass the gratitude onto Abbey.  What are your plans for costumes this year?  Is it too early to think about Halloween?

Linking up with Elaine, because everyone needs ideas for Halloween, right?

I thought Jacob "Becoming Santa" everyday when we come home was noteworthy..but I see that Abbey has him beat. :) Love her.

I am totally cracking up at how she thinks a pink helmet and scooter will be the perfect accents to a Get it, Got it, Good costume.

Now you know you're gonna have to go with that theme, right?

    Your house is a BLAST!!!!

Sawyer told me last Halloween he wanted to be the grim reaper this year. I was sure he'd forget about that and pick something a little less....creepy. But no. He's already talking about it. Maybe I could convince him to do the Get it, got it, good costume instead?

OMG. We just had a conversation not 3 minutes before I read this about cheese.

I love this costume idea. I also love how the weirdest things are so amusing for kids. Right now my baby thinks that magents are the bees knees. He will sit and put them on, take them off, over and over again. So cute.

    They are adorable!

My darling little cherub had his cuter than cute PBK spider costume on for less than five minutes before collapsing into a tantrum. I'm hoping this year goes better. Ha!

My boys have been planning their Halloween Costumes since last year! LOL!  Big T wants to be Batman, and Sweet Pea wants to be Iron Man.  There is going to be a whole lot of saving going on!

    That is priceless!
My sin wanted me to be Abby from sesame street last year. So I did. I wore an old bridesmaid dress and glitter and wings...it was ridiculous. And it scared the crap out of my son. He made me take the wig off. Oh well. I tried ;)

That seems like a completely logical idea...either that or you could tease your hair, wear ripped clothes and a sign around your neck that says "Children for Sale"...I was thinking about being that for Halloween.

Funny you mention this, my kids wanted to get their Halloween costumes when we were shopping for school supplies! They all want to be a different colored Power Ranger. Cute pictures, we love sidewalk chalk!

What a cute exchange!!  I love how kids can take such little things and find them so funny!! (and how they can take the most frustrating moment and make it fun again!!)

And no its not too early to start thinking about halloween...not that i have any idea what we're going to do this year!!

Oh my gosh, I haven't even thought about it yet this year.  But my boys have.  One wants to be a mummy and the other a dinosaur.  Wonder what K will be this year... first I have to get through planning her b-day party!!

Thanks for linking up, girl! xo

It is NOT too early to think of Halloween costumes.  In fact, I'm a little panicked that I have ZERO ideas so far!!
