Operation Organization - Playroom Edition

There's an old saying: When the cat's away, the mice will play.

Obviously, the mice never tried to cram a toy store's worth of goodies into a three bedroom house, because while our little kittens were with Grandma and Grandpa, there wasn't a lot of playing going on at home.

The plan was to move a lot of their toys down to the basement, including two thirds of the heavy hitting trifecta (dollhouse, train table, kitchen), along with our dining room rug.

And, oh, we had a little run in the morning, a 10K as part of our half marathon training.

Easy peasy, right?

So, run, move some toys, a leisurely dinner, maybe the midnight movie.  I had it all mapped out in my trusty planner.  What could go wrong?

For starters, the 87% humidity during the run wiped us out, and I ended up laying down “for a few minutes” and not waking up for an hour.

The dining room rug looked even more stained under the bright lights of the basement, so we hatched another plan, one involving moving the living room rug, a trip to IKEA, Elmer’s glue and copious amounts of glitter.  (Kidding about the glue and the glitter, but Abbey would have been thrilled to come home to a glittered house!)

Sorting and tossing and categorizing and moving toys between the kids’ rooms and the basement meant countless trips up and down stairs, taking a few hours instead of “about an hour”.

Late afternoon slid into evening, and we hurried through showers, driving past the movie theater in a rush, our chances of relaxing in the theater vanishing with each tick of the clock.

We slid out of IKEA with ten minutes to spare, our leisurely dinner consisting of some casual fish tacos, sharing raised eyebrows and dissolving into laughter as our waiter bounced around the restaurant.

After the drive home, we had neither the time nor energy to take advantage of our child-free night outside of the house.

But by the time I brought the kids home the next day, their new little playroom was organized.

Abbey did her silly little dance of joy.

Dylan grinned and hugged us and wandered around happily.

Maybe we’ll find time to play a little next time, but for now, I’m content to reclaim our living room from the multiplying-toy monster.

What would you do with a child-free Saturday?

Sigh. Organizing our playroom is on my to do list.
    But...but...it's so daunting.
    Yours looks amazing!
Can you come help with mine?
    :)

Oh I know this was a huge task but so worth it! You did an awesome job! Judging from the smiles, I am thinking the kids think so too!

My child-free days are usually spent cleaning up his room (& yes getting rid of toys he doesn't play with) and doing my chores. Laundry, dishes, etc. I let it all go to hell when he's with me. Joint custody does that to a person. I'd rather just try & enjoy the days I have him with me. I save the boring stuff for when I'm alone.

But I also grab some time with my friends. Because I love them so much. :)

I rarely get days away from my kids, but if I had the chance? I'd clean and reorganize the house! Your playroom looks great!

Sounds like you got a lot done!

As much as I need to do somethings around the house, I think I'd grab a book and cooler and park myself on the beach.

I don't blame you; I would definitely save the boring, tedious stuff for alone time and soak up every moment of fun time with your guy :)

Isn't it funny that "clean and reorganize" becomes a great way to spend alone time?

Next time...except we don't have too much beach around here.

We had to do that without the kids.  It would have been a disaster to try to do it with them anywhere in the vicinity.

So we're not alone in our need to organize!  I feel better about that :)

Well, we don't have any children... but right now, we're trying to renovate a house and all the headaches that come along with it.  Lol.  Great pictures!

Oh, how I wish we could organize our toys better! We have one whole room dedicated to toys, it is filled pretty much to capacity, and it is organized. Then we have a basement corner that is filled with yet more toys and not organized at all! I somewhat feel bad my kids have so many toys :(

it's looks so good, I'm just sorry that you didn't get more time to relax, because that is always my problem too, we take a day off to do something and have some time together and we never get to the Fun stuff. However, you both did a great job!!!!!!

Oh, renovation must be an exercise in patience!  Major projects make me cry.  Literally.

I try to purge every once in a while, but it's tough for me to do it for some reason.  I am sentimental and keep things because of the stories behind them, and I know that is silly :(

Thanks Kir!  Isn't it crazy how you want to "do a couple of things" and then go have fun, and by the time the work is finished, there's not time for anything else :(  Ryan and I need a free day!
