Changing the Countdown

The New Year's Eve countdown is something that inspires bubbling excitement in the pit of my stomach.  In that moment when that giant, crystal ball drops steadily from the sky, the new year is ripe with opportunities just waiting to be discovered.

Those moments after midnight have always seemed magical.

the magic of playing in a hot tub in the middle of winter

But the logistics of New Year's Eve can be a nightmare.  I've counted down from ten to one in a countless number of places: crowded dance clubs, a college bar where my friends and I were able to chat with the DJ as we chose our favorite songs to broadcast to an almost-empty room, friends' houses, and even the comfort of our own couch.

New Year's magic deserves something more, and the last two years we've found it.

We've spent the last two years away from home, Up North to fellow Michiganders, though our first year was much more west than north.

Between the lake effect and Michigan's typical winter temperatures, we've imagined snowy days and cozy nights, but we've encountered damp and surprisingly temperate weather both years.

This year we gathered ten adults (two more than last year) and seven kids (two more than last year) and spent the weekend cooking and snacking and playing board games that grow dusty most of the year.

Children that were little more than babies last year played on their own for long stretches of time, leaving the adults to referee the toddler climbers and snuggle the newest additions.

Football and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse took turns on the TV.  Bottles of scotch nestled in the corner of the kitchen as we doled out water and boxes of chocolate milk.

Three of the seven kids were awake for the countdown: the oldest, the youngest, and one in between, powered by a lengthy evening nap.

Miraculously, Abbey and Dylan went to sleep after observing a rousing game of Apples to Apples and stayed asleep even through Lady Gaga's performance and the ensuing dance party.

New Year's Eve has never looked so magical.

I rarely use a post for a double link-up, but I am so excited to finally be able to finally share in the #iPPP excitement that I'm making an exception.  I hope you don't mind.

  1. I'm from Way Up North Michigan! A Yooper! Grew up in Baraga, you have a clue where that is?

Hanging out with friends seems like the best time. Happy new Year!

  2. Those photos are fabulous! I wish we could do something like that, either up north when we go home to Michigan or somewhere back in Washington when we return, but I'm afraid it might be too much travel for the munchkins. Maybe in a couple of years. Either way, it does look ideal for NYE!

  3. That sounds like such a fun way to spend NYE!

  4. What a lovely way to spend New Years Eve!  One of my most memorable New Years Eve was one I spent a few years ago with my closest friends. It's so sweet to see the kids all played together and did their own little thing.

  5. We had fun, and so did the kids :)

  6. It's one of my favorite traditions that we've started since having kids!

  7. It was; we're already talking about how long it will be before our kids don't think it's so cool to hang out with their parents on NYE ;)

  8. I looked it up :)  You were way up there!  I bet Baraga would have snow on NYE, huh?

Happy New Year to you, too!

  9. I don't mind the double link up at all!!

I love Apples to Apples! The game is so much fun for everyone! I'm glad that you had a wonderful celebration with friends & family up north!

  10. It sounds like everyone had tons of fun! Happy New Year!

  11. Sounds like your New Years Eve was like ours. We had 7 kids awake at midnight from ages 4 to 13. The game of Life was the board game of choice this year and we watched the ball drop. Then the kids dug into their Gingerbread Houses. This was the first year my sister-in-law let her kids stay up for the real countdown. Usually she'll make them go to bed earlier and we have to do a fake countdown for them.

  12. Happy New Year! Looked like a fun one. We stayed at home and sang karaoke and played boardgames : )

  13. Great tradition.  This year was the first year I went out in 5 years and, well, I'm going to have to write about it soon.  Let's just say your way sounds so much better!

  14. I made it up this New Year's only to wait up for my teenager that was out. It was fun. I almost forgot. Your post makes me want to plan something more official next year.

  15. What a great way to ring in the new year! It looks like everyone had a great time.

  16. Fun! My kids were long asleep before the countdown, but even stuck in the living room, we had a good time. Also, my daughter has that same dress! What a cute picture!

  17. Out little man actually made it to midnight! He was all about the blowers or "honkies" as he called them. Ha!

  18. This post genuinely made me smile.

What memories you're making. For yourselves and your children.

(And Apples to Apples is the best!)

    XO

  19. That sounds like a wonderful tradition. We've been ringing in the New Year with friends at our place but, I may have to copy you. Less house cleaning means more time for the bottle of scotch!

  22. It really is wonderful.  I can't wait to start planning for next year.

  23. Yes, so fun, for the adults and the kids.

  24. I am not good at Apples to Apples, if it's possible to be good at it.  I am, however, pretty good at Trivial Pursuit (though rusty) and Catchphrase ;)  And obviously I am super duper cool, with this litany of board games ;)

  25. That was her Easter dress :)  She loves wearing her fancy dresses, and I figure she might as well!  Thankfully mine were asleep, too.  I know them; they would have been fine that night, but the next day they would have been a mess!

  26. Yes, we had so much fun.  It's a tradition I really hope we keep for years and years.

  27. We were talking about what would happen when our kids didn't want to come with us anymore and wanted to start going out with their friends.  Ski resort with their own little house?  Leashes?

  28. Giggle.  I can't wait to hear about your first NYE in half a decade :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, we would so get along IRL.  That sounds fun :)

  30. Life!  With the cars :)  That's so fun.  A separate countdown is a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Happy New Year!  It was lots of fun :)  The best of both worlds, really.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes!  It's nice to not have to really clean up.  Except the kitchen.  Over and over again ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's so fun, but I am terrible at it.  I always think my answers are funny until I hear other people's :)

  34. So much better than going out.  I am in the process of planning a similar trip.  Not on New Years, but with adults and a gaggle of kids.  This is exactly how I picture it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sounds like a magical way to ring in the new year to me! I love getting together with a few families with kids that we are all comfy with. There is nothing like the love & fun that flows through the air.

  36. Yay for being able to participate in #iPPP - Congrats on the new phone!! :D

    And adorable magic! :)

  39. Sounds like the perfect year to welcome a new year. Happy 2012!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh wow! That sounds absolutely amazing. WAY better than what we do for New Years, which is big FAT nothing. cue sad face.

In fact, I was pissed when I was rudely awoken by fireworks at midnight. I was like, who in the hell is letting off fireworks in December. Oh yeah, it's NYE, that's why.

    See? I'm a loser :)

    Happy 2012!

  42. Our new year's are nearly identical!  We had 8 adults and 6 kids, all of them under six . . . I can't wait until the time that we can actually all play board games (something about a 2 year old using the car in Monopoly to make crashing noises with prevents it, now)

  43. Aw, what energy! I'm usually asleep by ten...and though I was awake this time I didn't look awake like THIS....wonderful post

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's wonderful.
I totally get the "Up North" referrance. I live just outside of Michigan in Canada and we hear that all the time.
We wanted to have a "just us" New Years but that went bust.
We ended up having a housefull of people but itturned out well

  45. Sounds like such a fun way to ring in the new year. I'd like to do something like that too next year. We have friends we rent a beach house with every summer and we have the best time. I think NYE deserves a grand get together like that!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oooh, I'd love to do summer, too.  Getting the kids all tired at the beach?  Even more perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Isn't the term Up North kind of funny? I'm glad things turned out for you, even though your plans didn't turn out the way you expected.

    ReplyDelete
  48. If I could bottle and sell the energy of a four year old...well, we'd take a lot more vacations ;)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes, when the kids started to want to "play" with us, things started going downhill :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hope so much that we can keep this tradition going until our kids are old enough to sneak away and drink a stolen beer and talk about how lame it is to spend NYE with their parents :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. People were shooting off fireworks by our house on Christmas.  At night.  I was not a fan either!

NOT a loser.  The year before we first did this?  I don't even know if we saw the ball drop.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You know what might have made it just a little better?  Your chocolate & sea salt cookies.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Aw thank you!  I love when all four of us can have fun doing the same thing :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. It is fun, fun, fun.  I suggest a hot tub (or pool), dividing up meals, and bringing lots of board games.  And booze.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes, my kids don't have cousins yet, so this is so fun for them :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thank you!  I love the new phone :)  (More than one should love a little phone.)

  57. This sounds like the perfect way to ring in the new year.

  58. Great photos. They depict joy and energy. Great qualities that compliment your words about New Year's Celebrations perfectly.  Enjoyed the post so much!
