For months, crisp paper and smooth boxes of crayons have been flowing out of stores and into backpacks seemingly too large for little shoulders.
For the first time, I shopped for supplies with a list I hadn't created, grabbing glue sticks and thin palettes of watercolors without knowing the projects for which they would be used.
We tried on backpacks and shoes with velcro that could withstand both a playground and Abbey's staunch opinions.
Impossibly bright blue eyes sparkled at the smallest mention of school.
Older, brown eyes filled with tears at odd moments, unsure whether our discussions about school were preparing her or me for this change in our lives.
She awoke in the morning, surprisingly cooperative, eager to leave the house without stalling or hesitation.
My fingers shook as I fastened her beloved kitty necklace around her neck, gently lifting her hair through the thin chain. Smiling, I kissed the cat charm, telling her my kiss would be with her all day.
All four of us went to her classroom, carefully hanging her bag on a hook, placing her new water bottle into her plastic cubby. Bravely, she donned a name tag and quietly said hello, giddy excitement replaced by reserved anticipation.
Deliberately, I pushed aside my own concerns, my own uncertainty and focused on this first little step into a new world, just waiting to be discovered.
She will be amazing, my magical, lovely girl.

OH, she's lovely. I understand all that you say here. The fears are so much our own. And they fly even when we are looking through our fingers, holding our breath.
ReplyDeleteAm tearing up every time you wrote about your daughter's milestones. She is truly adorable. And brave too! Congratulations, little girl, on your first day of school :)
ReplyDeleteShe is going to love it! Love the pics and especially the one of you:)
ReplyDeleteShe's such a brave beautiful girl!! How did she do? Wonderfully I bet.
ReplyDeleteAnd look at you, adorable you with that awesome outfit and huge bag! Love!
I hope she had a good day.
ReplyDeleteI love that you kissed her beloved necklace. That reminds me of the book, The Kissing Hand. I used to kiss my daughter's hand when she first started school.
I think she did. I am a little more worried about Thursday, for her, because she "gets" it a little more now and is talking about how she missed us :(
ReplyDeleteHa! Isn't that a funny picture?
ReplyDeleteI think she had fun. She says she had fun, but she was so tired yesterday afternoon. It's going to be an adjustment, that's for sure!
Thanks Joann! She was tired; maybe I'll get a nap once or twice :) (I can hope, right?)
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you so much :) Such a big day for her, and I will remember it always.
ReplyDeleteI hope so. She is so very wonderful, and I want nothing more than for her (and Dylan, too) to spread her little wings and fly :)
ReplyDeleteMy heart just melted. You kissed her necklace, what a gorgeous way to "keep yourself with her all day" and how pretty she looked, such a fashion plate. Love the pose and her dress...perfection all the way.
ReplyDeleteHow cute were you??? And your SUNFLOWER bag (I adore sunflowers) that picture just made me smile so big!!!!
Loved all the pictures and am so glad her first day was so awesome!
Such sweet first day of school moments. I hope both kiddos have fabulous school years.
ReplyDeleteLove that you captured this for your Magical Moment post!
ReplyDeleteI hope she likes it :) She seems to, so far.
ReplyDeleteI felt terrible, because they had to make these little posters to take in on the first day, and one of the things they suggested was to put a picture on it, so the kids had something to see. We made it together and talked about it, and after I picked her up, she said, "I missed you and didn't see the picture." I'm sure they didn't have time to hang them up yet. It better be there tomorrow! I am thinking of tucking another photo in the side pocket of her bookbag or something.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that sunflower bags sooooo 70's? (Well, it was 1980, but you know...)
Both of you have wonderful first day pictures! My son just started preschool tis year with a really big backpack.
ReplyDeleteWow, that bag was as big as you! I hope she loved her first day!
ReplyDeleteOh, how sweet! Such a big milestone!
ReplyDeleteAdorable pics- love that you included one of you, too!
Love her headband and love your large shopping bag of school supplies! Looks like the 70s/early 80s!
ReplyDeleteSuch a magical time - good choice for this link up!
Oh, how sweet! She looks absolutely adorable!
ReplyDeleteShe is just SO cute!
ReplyDeleteShe's cute! And look at you on your first day! I remember those bags too! They were pretty cool back then... now that I look at them I'm reconsidering my fashion sense.
ReplyDeleteSo very sweet! I love that you said your kiss would stay with her all day. She looks adorable striking a pose in her first day dress. :)
ReplyDeleteOn the second day, I kissed her hand, and then she "put it in her backpack," and asked for another one LOL.
ReplyDeleteI think that bag is so funny :) The seventies and eighties were a rough time, fashion-wise.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks :) She is having fun. I'm not sold yet :(
ReplyDeleteOctober 1980 to be exact! Funny, right :)
ReplyDeleteShe has hot pink cords that might have looked similar to the red ones I was wearing. I thought about putting her in those, but she's a dress girl :)
ReplyDeleteI kind of wish I still had that bag. Wouldn't it be a cute shopping bag?
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks! I ended up buying Abbey a smaller-than-regular sized backpack. It looks normal sized on her back :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it fascinating how some kids start pre-school with a "meh! bye Mom" attitude and others sound like it is the end of life as we ALL know it. My granddaughter was just like your daughter. Excited to go, and ready for us to leave when we dropped her off.(1st day Mommy, Daddy and Grandma - I'm the daycare) I think it makes it harder for US when they are so unaffected by leaving us... LOL!
ReplyDeletesuch beautiful pictures...you will treasure them forever!
